Opening the Playground

Almost half a year after our last post, the playground is nearing open. It sits in a beautiful spot—nestled next to the lake and surrounded by park. In summer, a nearby, a big Cottonwood with heart-shaped leaves reminds us of a hike with Quinny and Ames. Even now, in Winter, with Denver’s sunny winters and nearby ducks and the Boathouse ramp where kids ride their scooters, it’s really lovely. Befitting of our sunny kiddo.

Washington Park Playground Updates

In the months since we last shared, the playground has come a long way. All working on it—design, carve, build, management—have done a wonderful job to realize a truly beautiful space.

The playground is a mix of rolling knolls, swings, climbing nets and tunnels lined with turf, and a bumpy, rolling slide like the one Quinn went down at Stephan Field before Brooke and Austen’s wedding (but thankfully, not metal!) Throughout the play area is a forest of Robinia posts and a series of shorter stepper stumps on which kids can climb. It feels natural and explorable and creative. As we shared before, our family was honored to be able to create art for twelve of the posts and three benches, each celebrating the big and little wonders that our kids explored across books and throughout Colorado, and that remind us so much of Quinn. These carvings are peppered through the playground to facilitate discovery as kids play.

Thanks to John, Clara, and Leann for their incredible talent hand-carving the logs and benches. It’s hard to describe how special these pieces are. They have soul and they are sweet, and just sing of Quinn. He would love them.

The team is wrapping up final details that were noticed on the walk, and the playground should be open by the end of this month. We’ve said it many times, but thank you all for this opportunity to have such a beautiful way to remember and celebrate our Quinny. We’ve stopped by so many times over these months, checking out progress with Ames, sharing with Esme, sometimes to cry, and looking forward to the days of having kids excited to spend time at a spot we know Quinn would love.

With love, the Szekeresh family

Additional Updates

Ribbon Cutting

We have not scheduled a ribbon cutting part for the winter, beyond a small toast when it opens. We will have a larger celebration when the weather warms, and will be in touch with more details.

Future Parks

Thank you all so much for your support to make this playground a reality. We have funds remaining from current donations and will continue to use this and 100% of any money donated to to the Quinn Malin Szekeresh Memorial Fund create and improve public playspaces in celebration of Quinn. We’ll share news once the next project is in the works; below is a link to donate, if you’d like.

QMS Running Club

The Quinn Malin Szekeresh Running Club will be running the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati, May 5-7th. If you would like to join the team (we have people walking the 5k, running 10k, the half and the full), use the code QMS at sign up.

Be the Match

If you haven’t already, please consider registering for Be the Match. I cannot say enough about how critical it is to build a strong database to provide people and families with their greatest chance for success and hope. If you are nervous or have questions, please, just ask. We’re open books. Thank you.

18 Months

It’s been 18 months of missing our Quinny. We’ve wanted to share an update for a while, but have been slow to do so for a few reasons, the core being that missing our wonderful kiddo has been very, very hard. However, in this time, we remembered and celebrated in some beautiful ways. We’d love to share some updates with you.

Washington Park Playground Updates

One of the other reasons we’ve been slow to post has been on request of Denver Parks & Rec, as construction details and contracts were finalized. We’re truly excited to share now.

To recap quickly, especially for those of you who are less familiar with Denver, since last summer, we’ve been working with Denver Parks & Recreation and the Denver Park Trust on the Washington Park N. Boathouse Area project. This project was already in the works (we had weighed in on the concepts in community review), and was seeking additional funding. Washington Park is a fantastic and well-loved park in Denver and happens to be our neighborhood park, where we spent countless hours as a family. The contribution we made went directly to the playground portion of the park, which is designed with younger children in mind. This money supported construction, provided art, and enabled a fully turf surface that is more neutropenic friendly and more accessible.

Earlier this spring, we had a call with the team at DPR where they shared that they had acceptable RFP responses and would be moving forward with project construction. This was great news, doubly so, as thought had honestly never crossed our minds that it might not move forward. On Mother’s Day, fences went up around the project site, and demo began soon after.

While construction started, we began working on custom artwork for the cedar benches and several of the robinia posts that make up the “forest” element of the play area. This artwork will be tonal and cut into the wood. It’s been a lot of work, but has been such a special way to remember Quinny, and share memories we had with him.

As you can see in the plans, there are three benches on the site. We created three different layouts highlighting places, plants, and animals we shared with Quinn on each—the western “Mountain” bench, central “Neighborhood” bench, and eastern “Meadow” bench. We were inspired by traditional woodcut styles, which have a playful, crafted quality, and the work of Eric Carle, as Quinn loved Brown Bear so much. The resulting artwork is a combination of local and familiar flora and animal pairs together. Memories of Quinny run through them: his delicious little bear growl; the eagle we saw on Christmas day; the heart-shaped aspens and cottonwoods that rustled on our hikes; the weed and flower bouquets that Kendal and Ames would bring home each day; the bird songs we listened for; his tap-tap-tap! of a woodpecker; and the neighborhood dogs that he would bark with and pet and would never mind if they kissed his face.

The center bench will also feature a plaque honoring Quinn. It’s so touching to have his name be a part of the memories people will make at the playground, a place Ames and Esme will also know with Quinn.

The robinia forest gave us another chance to engage in visual storytelling. The “forest” is a mix of tall logs and short stepping stumps for kids to climb on. We created 12 “bookplate” style designs featuring animals and plants that can be discovered at different heights on the posts. Butterflies and ornate box turtles appear near the ground; two lark bunting fly at the top of the posts. The framing dot pattern was pulled from the dots on the fawn and are a nod to Chicka-chicka-boom-boom, another favorite of Quinn’s.

We wanted to again say thank you and share how grateful we are to you all for contributing to this playground. We miss our kiddo 10,000 times every day, and he is still in every memory we make. It’s truly been a gift to be a part of this project that will mean so much to our local community, in celebration of our peach, Quinn.

The park is expected to complete later this year. We’ll be in touch with more details and of any details around opening day, when ready.

With love, thank you.

Quinn Malin Szekeresh Memorial Running Club

The Quinn Malin Szekeresh Memorial Run Club has two main functions. Firstly, to raise money to fund playground projects. Secondly, to increase the quality of life of our family and friends. We are all given a finite amount of time together, some of which is predetermined, as in Quinny’s case. Nevertheless, if fate allows, we can extend our time together by living healthier and more active lives. Running allows me, Daniel, time to think about and connect with my son. Racing together gives us a time to celebrate Quinn and allows him to be continual positive force in the lives of those who loved him.

Last autumn, Daniel organized the QMS Memorial Running Club. Around 50 friends and family trained for and ran and walked in Cincinnati’s Flying Pig Marathon, Half, 10k, 5k, and Flying Fur races. It was an incredible turnout and felt so special to have Quinn bring us all together. Six months later, Cincinnati hosted another marathon, and a group came out to run again.

Oak Tavern’s Memorial Golf Outing

For two years now, the Oak Tavern has hosted a memorial golf outing raising money to support the goals of the QMS Memorial Fund. With many teams participating, challenges accepted, and fun had, it’s become a day together that both celebrates our kiddo and pays it forward by continuing to support parks and kids in Quinn’s name.

Huge thanks to the Oak Tavern and especially (Auntie and Uncle) Brooke & Austen Lampe for their love and work in organizing.
